Villa Park against Aston Villa.

The likes of record signing Fernando Torres, Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun could make their Reds debuts at Villa Park.
Last season in the Premiership Liverpool beat Villa 3-1 at Anfield
but the match at Villa Park ended in a rather drab goalless draw.

Villa's major signings of the summer has been West Ham pair

The French club - who'll become the Reds' 100th opponent in continental football - finished third in their domestic league last season to qualify for Europe's premier competition for the first time.

Rafael Benitez delivered on his promise to rotate his squad for today's Champions League third qualifying round first leg match in south west France.
The Spaniard made six changes from the side which beat Aston Villa on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season, with Peter Crouch - who made it known he was unhappy at his omission on Saturday - in the starting line-up.

The last time these two sides faced each other was in the Champions League semi-final last season when Liverpool won on penalties.

STEVEN Gerrard has suffered a hairline fracture in a toe bone but will play in Sunday's cruch match against Chelsea, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said.
A scan on Thursday revealed the Reds captain sustained the minor fracture during Wednesday's 1-0 win at Toulouse in the Champions League third qualifying round first leg.
Though he will be fit enough to play, the midfielder will probably have to sit out England's friendly with visitors Germany at Wembley next Wednesday.
"He has a hairline fracture in his toe," Benitez said.
"I think he will be available for the weekend. The only problem is, if we push him now, he might need a little bit of a rest afterwards.
"I was talking to the doctor and he said it is not a big risk for him to play, though there is always some risk."
The Reds boss said England's vice-captain might need a week or two of rest if he plays against Chelsea - meaning he will likely not feature against Germany.
"If we want to push him for this game, it would be a risk to push him again and again, because it could become more serious," the Spaniard said.
"I still need to talk to (England manager) Steve McClaren but I think he will understand it would be a big risk."
McClaren has already lost one high-profile player to a hairline fracture: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney suffered such a break in his left foot in Sunday's 0-0 draw at home to Reading and will be out for two months.

Rob Styles has been dropped from next weekend's Barclays Premier League refereeing list after his penalty blunder at Anfield on Sunday.
Styles has admitted he made an error in awarding Chelsea a second half penalty which allowed them to draw level after Fernando Torres had given Liverpool the lead.
Referees chief Keith Hackett has now confirmed Styles will be given next weekend off following the fall out from the controversial decision.

"I spoke to Rob this morning and obviously he is extremely disappointed with the decision and admitted he got it wrong. I have left a message with Rafael Benitez to apologise," said Hackett.

"Having looked at a video and seen a better angle and a better view, clearly he (Styles) now recognises that he got it wrong and he's deeply apologetic for that. I think, in fact, he too will be making contact with Liverpool in order to offer his apologies."

Youngsters Gabriel Palletta has been offload to Boca Juniors. Last season summer signing has found hard to break into 1st team and has gone back to his country.

Jamie Carragher has broken ribs in last saturday match against Sunderland.

may the luck will be with us all season, but still cant say much about winning EPL this year as season is too early. 35 EPL games to go untill end of the season.

Reading 2-4 Liverpool

Fernando Torres capped a fine display with a hat-trick as Liverpool dumped Reading out of the Carling Cup. Yossi Benayoun fired Liverpool ahead, but Bobby Convey volleyed an equaliser from Nicky Shorey's corner.

Liverpool bagi seasson 2007 / 2008 agak slow sket dan game mereke tidak berapa konsisten. Walaupun masih mengekalkan rekod tanpa kalah sama dengan Arsenal, Liverpool perlulah memperbaiki permainan dan mempertingkat prestasi. UEFA Champions lak Liverpool bermula dgn agak hambar dan agak mustahil dapat mara ke peringkat Kalah mati memandangkan di peringkat kumpulan Liverpool x ada kemenangan dan prestasi agak menurun.

Steven Gerrard is not the most complete midfielder in the world. He isn't even the most complete midfielder in Liverpool.

The one thing that I kept being reminded of during the game on Sunday, apart from the fact that Dirk Kuyt must be Chicken Boo from the Animaniacs cartoon (he's not a footballer, he's a giant chicken!), was how much we missed Xabi Alonso. We owned the ball and just couldn't do anything with it, especially in midfield. Mascherano played well but tackling is his forté and he doesn't really excel after this, so it was left to Gerrard to plot our assault on United, and what did he come up with? His usual serving of 60 or 70-yard crossfield balls either over the endline or out over the side line. The only time he doesn't give it away is when he turns around and passes it back to Carra or Hyypia, who then hit a 60 or 70-yard ball to nowhere. If you watch Gerrard when he gets the ball, he immediately looks to the corners, looking to play the ball over about five players and through the eye of needle so he can get a round of applause for himself.

Alonso is the closest thing we have to Fabregas (who is actually the most complete midfielder in the world), a player who has enough intelligence to dictate the game and pick out the right pass. Gerrard, if you ask me, is a bit of a glory merchant, always looking for the Hollywood ball so everyone will tell him how good he is, rather than keeping it simple when he needs to and building up a decent attack.

I'm not saying he's a bad player. Technically he's excellent and he works hard, but when it comes to dictating a game, which all complete midfielders should be able to do, he just can't do it. Like most of the English players, the media has blinded pretty much everybody to this because he scores a lot of goals and this glosses over his weaknesses.

He's an important player for Liverpool, but Alonso is even more important. George, chum, I know you're a Liverpool fan, so am I, but I haven't let that blind me to the obvious. Gerrard is good, but he is not complete. Credit where it is due, Fabregas is miles ahead of him.

One final point. The free-kick we got at the end was tailor-made for Aurelio. He's excellent at dead balls. Van der Sar was on the wrong side to deal with an Aurelio shot, which greatly increased the chances of getting a score, but Stevie decided he knew what's best. I know it's the heat of the moment and all, but the reason he has the armband is to make important decisions like that. Maybe Aurelio would have missed, but he had a much better chance of scoring than Gerrard did.

i do agree to some of the points....but in my personal opinion..its down to the manager to actually balance the team, pick the right combination n stick with it...its the purchasing policies n selection of players, back-ups n squad strength and the depth of the bench...the season is long n hard, and the epl without a winter break makes it harder..

good post that from a pool fan..sensible n opinionated..just becoz u are a fan, it doesnt mean u cannot criticized ur club..blindly following n accepting mediocre performances on the field n being deluded doesnt make u a hardcore fan...more likely a spastic wagon jumper n glory hunting fan..
